Quick Facts on Breast Cancer

Breast cancer usually develops in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, which are the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. In rare cases, breast cancer can originate in the stromal tissues, which are the fatty connective tissues of the breast. Over a period of time, cancer cells can invade healthy breast tissue and move to an individual’s lymph nodes.

Localization Tattoos Featuring Invisible Ink

When a woman goes in for radiation treatment, she is typically given dot tattoos in India Ink. These tattoos are permanent markers that tell a radiation doctor where to radiate each time and they may last for years down the road. Dr. Schreiber is the only radiation oncologist in the state of Colorado to use invisible ink for localization tattoos. These invisible markings are located by black light and eliminate their visibility.

Reduced Treatment Time

Our breast cancer treatment eliminates prolonged hospitalization by performing an outpatient procedure. Patients are comfortable during and after their brachytherapy procedure, and once the procedure is completed, no further treatment is needed if the patient is low-risk. It is also the least expensive form of radiation management for breast cancer.

When Littleton Radiation and Medical Oncology was first established, we only focused on helping patients who suffered from prostate cancer. After a few years, however, we took existing technologies and expanded their uses to treat other types of cancer, such as breast cancer.

We have drastically decreased the time for treatment from seven weeks to a little over one hour, and our treatments have produced survival times and control of cancer equal to or better than that of external beam radiation. The reduced patient time commitment improves the patient’s quality of life, as well as eliminates any timing issues related to the delivery of chemotherapy.
